Other Emergency Actions
Some emergencies require a specific action instead of evacuation or sheltering in place. Follow official instructions and be prepared to change your actions if conditions change.
Drop, Cover, and Hold On
During an earthquake:
- Drop to your hands and knees
- Cover your head and neck
- Get under a sturdy table or desk if one is nearby
- Hold on until the shaking stops
- Stay away from windows and falling objects
Move to Higher Ground
During flooding or rapidly rising water:
- Move away from low-lying areas
- Go to higher ground when instructed
- Do not walk or drive through floodwater
- Never drive around barricades or road closures
Avoid the Area
For fires, police activity, hazardous materials, damaged infrastructure, or other incidents:
- Stay away from the affected area
- Do not enter closed streets or restricted zones
- Give emergency crews room to work
- Use alternate routes
Reduce Travel
Officials may ask residents to remain off the roads even when there is no formal Shelter in Place order.
- Delay unnecessary trips
- Keep roads clear for emergency vehicles
- Avoid affected neighborhoods
- Check road conditions before traveling
Conserve Water or Power
Utility emergencies may require temporary conservation.
- Reduce nonessential water or electricity use
- Follow City or utility instructions
- Do not use generators indoors or in enclosed spaces
- Keep refrigerators and freezers closed during power outages when possible
Water Safety Instructions
If a drinking-water advisory is issued:
- Follow the specific instructions provided
- Do not assume tap water is safe for drinking or food preparation
- Use bottled or properly treated water when directed
- Continue until officials announce the advisory has ended
Stay Put and Wait for Instructions
Sometimes the safest action is simply to remain where you are temporarily.
- Monitor official information
- Keep your phone charged
- Avoid unnecessary calls
- Be prepared to evacuate or take another action if instructions change
