Monterey Hills Wildfire Preparedness

The Monterey Hills present unique wildfire challenges due to steep terrain, vegetation, limited access, and the proximity of homes to open space.

South Pasadena is taking a measured, long-term approach to reducing wildfire risk in the area. The City's strategy combines vegetation management, emergency access improvements, ongoing assessment, and regional coordination while considering environmental impacts, hillside stability, habitat, tree health, and the character of the Monterey Hills.

A Balanced Approach to Wildfire Risk Reduction

Wildfire mitigation is not simply about removing vegetation. Healthy vegetation can provide important environmental benefits, including habitat, shade, erosion control, and slope stability.

The City's approach is to reduce hazardous fuel conditions while preserving healthy vegetation wherever practical. Treatment methods are selected based on the conditions of each location and may include:

  • Targeted grazing

  • Mechanical brush and vegetation removal

  • Tree trimming and maintenance

  • Removal of dead, diseased, or hazardous vegetation

  • Improvements to roadway and emergency access

  • Ongoing inspection and evaluation of hillside conditions

Different areas may require different treatments. Factors such as terrain, accessibility, vegetation type, environmental sensitivity, proximity to homes, and potential fire behavior are considered when determining the appropriate approach.

Monterey Hills Wildfire Protection Projects

The City continues to evaluate and implement projects intended to reduce hazardous vegetation and improve wildfire resilience throughout the Monterey Hills.

Recent efforts have included targeted vegetation management in strategic locations, improvements to vegetation clearance along access routes, and coordination among Fire, Public Works, property owners, contractors, and neighboring jurisdictions.

These projects are intended to reduce the continuity and concentration of hazardous fuels, improve firefighter access, and create more defensible conditions between open space and developed areas.

An Ongoing Effort

Wildfire mitigation is not a one-time project. Vegetation grows back, environmental conditions change, and new information becomes available.

The City will continue to evaluate conditions in the Monterey Hills, monitor completed projects, and adjust its approach as needed. The goal is to improve wildfire resilience through practical, sustainable measures that balance public safety with responsible stewardship of the hillside environment.
