Preparedness for Renters

Renters should prepare for emergencies just like homeowners, but some responsibilities are different. Know your building, understand your evacuation options, protect your belongings, and be ready to leave quickly if needed.

Prepare Ahead

  • Sign up for City emergency alerts
  • Know your evacuation zone
  • Learn all exits from your building
  • Identify more than one way out, if possible
  • Know where stairs, fire extinguishers, and emergency exits are located
  • Keep hallways, exits, and doorways clear
  • Prepare a Home Emergency Kit and Go Bag
  • Keep sturdy walking shoes near your bed
  • Keep important documents and emergency contacts easy to access
  • Plan for children, older adults, pets, and service animals
  • Know how you will leave if elevators are unavailable
  • Talk with roommates or household members about where you will meet

Protect Your Belongings

Your landlord’s insurance generally covers the building, not your personal belongings.

  • Consider renters insurance
  • Keep a basic inventory of valuable belongings
  • Take photos of important items
  • Store copies of insurance information and receipts
  • Keep important documents backed up or stored securely

Know Your Building

Ask your property owner or manager about:

  • Emergency procedures
  • Fire alarm and sprinkler systems
  • Utility shutoffs
  • Evacuation routes
  • Emergency contact information
  • How residents will be notified if building systems are not working

During an Emergency

  • Follow official evacuation or shelter-in-place instructions
  • Use stairs instead of elevators during a fire or when directed
  • Do not re-enter the building until officials say it is safe
  • Report blocked exits, damaged alarms, or other safety concerns to the property owner or appropriate authority
