Evacuation
Why Evacuation Planning Matters
Emergencies can change quickly, and waiting until the last minute can make it harder to leave safely. Knowing where you will go, how you will get there, and what you need to take can reduce confusion and help you act quickly when instructions are issued. Preparing ahead is especially important if you need extra time, transportation, medical equipment, or help evacuating.
Ready
Prepare before an emergency happens.
- Sign up for City emergency alerts
- Know your evacuation zone
- Identify more than one route out of your neighborhood
- Prepare a Go Bag for each household member
- Prepare supplies for pets and service animals
- Keep medications, medical equipment, and important documents ready
- Keep your vehicle fueled or charged
- Keep phones and portable batteries charged
- Plan for children, older adults, pets, and anyone with access or functional needs
- Arrange transportation if you do not drive
- Talk with family members about where you will meet if separated
Set
Be ready to leave quickly when conditions change.
- Monitor official alerts and emergency information
- Place Go Bags, medications, and essential items near the door
- Bring pets inside and prepare carriers, leashes, or crates
- Load essential supplies into your vehicle
- Keep vehicle keys with you
- Make sure everyone in your household knows the plan
- Let family or your emergency contact know where you are going
- Follow instructions about routes, road closures, or shelter locations
- Leave early if you need extra time
If you need more time, an Evacuation Warning means go.
Go
Leave immediately when ordered or when conditions become unsafe.
- Take household members and pets with you
- Take medications, medical equipment, and your Go Bag if immediately available
- Follow official evacuation routes and instructions
- Do not delay to gather nonessential belongings
- Keep roads clear for emergency vehicles
- Do not drive around road closures or barricades
- Do not return home until officials say it is safe
Before You Leave
- Where should I go?
- Who should I meet?
- What should I do?
